Hypnum / Fern Moss
This type of moss is ideal for Japanese Zen gardens as it will thrive in the shade and can handle partial sunlight but not direct sunlight. The color of the moss is a medium green and it is known as a versatile and low growing moss. There are several different species of hypnum / fern moss that are available in the northeast and typically Moss Acres will send a variety of them to you to help improve the look and beauty of your Japanese Zen gardens. The moss can either be purchased by the square foot or by cubic foot.

Cushion Moss
Typically this moss will vary in sizes between 4” x 4” and 12” x 12” and is sold in clumps which are equal to five square feet. As mentioned above Japanese Zen gardens use moss, stone and sand and this particular moss product prefers sandy soil. Cushion moss prefers the shade but can only tolerate partial sun. The moss is a lighter green color with a silvery-white cast to it and grows in a round cushion shape. Cushion moss is available in clumps of five square feet.

Hair Cap Moss
Currently available in clumps equaling five square feet at a very affordable price and an ideal solution for Japanese Zen gardens. This moss product is unique due to the fact that it has soil anchoring structures that closely work like roots and for that reason this moss is shipped with the soil still attached. Hair cap moss prefers to grown in medium shade to partial sun.

Rock Cap Moss
One our most popular moss products and is also a great solution to use with Japanese Zen gardens. This moss product is typically found growing on top of rocks in the wild and is a medium to dark green dense moss. This is the best moss to use when you need to cover a lot of space where grass with not grow or if you are building very large Japanese Zen gardens.
